A major Korean hospital is going smart. And going blockchain.

The Korean-language news site Daily Medi reports that Seoul Medical Center will launch its “Smart Hospital” project next month. Undertaken in conjunction with the Ministry of Science and ICT, the project — to be completed by the end of 2019 — aims to improve the speed and accuracy of hospital services through the construction of a blockchain-based network. According to the article (and translated by Cointelegraph), the hospital will build an “automated, personalized, integrated medical information platform by providing electronic prescription delivery, certificate issuance, and insurance claims through the blockchain-based system.”

Seoul Medical Center’s project is one of several public blockchain projects the Ministry of Science and ICT is sponsoring this year. Say what you will about Seoul’s view on cryptocurrency, but the government has been very keen to explore the potential of blockchain technology to improve the world in which we live. And with private entities such as Samsung and Kakao going big into blockchain, 2019 promises to be a big, big year in blockchain in Korea.
